Near Compiègne, discover the fortified castle of Pierrefonds, dismantled in the 17th century and reinvented in the 19th century by the architect Viollet-le-Duc into an extraordinary reinterpretation of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. An architectural treasure awaits you: the chapel, the courtyard of honor, or the cellars will leave you speechless.
Built by Louis XV and Louis XVI, refurbished under Napoleon I and then Napoleon III, the Château de Compiègne was a high place of court life and the exercise of power. The originality and beauty of the largest neo-classical French castle, the quality of its interior decorations and furniture, constitute a unique set, a historical place which, alongside Versailles and Fontainebleau, is one of the three most important French royal and imperial residences.
The Château de Chantilly is one of the jewels of French heritage. It is also the work of a man with an exceptional destiny: Henri d'Orléans, Duke of Aumale, son of the last King of the French, Louis-Philippe. This prince, considered the greatest collector of his time, made Chantilly the showcase for his countless masterpieces and precious manuscripts. The castle has passed through the centuries as the Duke of Aumale bequeathed it in 1886 to the Institut de France: the perfect opportunity to embark on a journey through time in the heart of a princely residence. In tribute to his illustrious predecessors, the princes of Condé, the Duke of Aumale named this set the "Condé Museum".
The Forest of Compiègne is a state forest in Hauts-de-France close to Compiègne. Covering an area of 14,357 hectares (for the state-owned part), it is one of France's large forested areas and the fifth largest state forest in metropolitan France by size. The forest has 17 walking loop trails and 11 cycle path routes arranged by the Compiègne region. One of them connects Compiègne and Pierrefonds on an 11.3 km track. The end of the Beaux-Monts avenue, which runs through the forest for four kilometers in the extension of the park of the Château de Compiègne, offers a viewpoint over the forest, Compiègne, and the castle.
